FreshDirect’s 4-Minute Meals
You are what you eat.
Hungry but there’s nothing in the fridge? Working long hours in the office and have no energy left to cook dinner when you get home? Need something edible that beats cup noodle and pizza delivery? Help is on the way, in the form of FreshDirect’s 4-Minute Meals.
FreshDirect is an online company that sells fresh, quality groceries and ships them to customers. Recently, I tried three of their 4-Minute Meals to see if they were worth repurchasing. I picked some options that sounded tasty.
First up: Rigatoni & Meatballs. I’m convinced that the basil adds some quality to this fine meal, although that could just be my inner aesthete speaking. But really, what is there not to love about this dish? Mozzarella and ricotta cheeses with meatballs and rigatoni cooked al dente (this is key, folks: overcooked pasta is a HUGE no-no in my book) – all tossed up in a garlic-y marinara sauce to finish. The sauce and textures melded perfectly here. Plus, the meatballs weren’t at all hard or drab. Just sublime. Drizzle liberally with olive oil.
VERDICT: By far one of (if not the) most savory 4-Minute Meals ever. This quick version of rigatoni and meatballs isn’t just good “for a 4-minute meal” – it’s good, period. If you enjoy Italian fare, you’ll want to stock up on more of these!
Next up: Lemon-Caper Chicken. The distinct flavor of the asparagus nicely offsets the lemon-infused chicken, keeping the lemon from becoming too overwhelming. And surprisingly, the roasted chicken isn’t overly bland or hard as a rock. I’m already biased in favor of noodles over rice, so I found the medley of bow-tie pasta, roasted chicken and asparagus with a hint of lemon delightful.
VERDICT: Pretty good. This is one I wouldn’t mind having again, though it wouldn’t be my top choice (see the aforementioned Rigatoni & Meatballs).
Finally, Citrus-Soy Chicken. I had misgivings about the chicken being overcooked and tough (this IS grilled chicken breast we’re talking about). Unfortunately, in this case, my hunch was correct. The citrus-soy sauce really didn’t give the chicken and already-dry brown rice much moisture. The sauce actually seemed to have evaporated in the microwave (I don’t even want to think about the radioactive damage the microwave is causing to my brain – that’s another post altogether!). The only redeeming factor to this meal was the snow peas, which I tend to like anyway.
VERDICT: How else to put it kindly? I won’t be ordering this one again.
